The Spruce Gall Adelgid

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid & Spruce Gall Adelgid

Two very small insects are causing damage in the North East’s Hemlock and Spruce trees.

The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid is most easily identified by its woolly ovisacs found on Hemlock trees from Maine to Georgia. Areas of extensive tree mortality and decline are found throughout the infested region.

The Spruce Gall Adelgid is a small not easily seen insect that feeds by sucking plant juices. This causes the formation of obvious cone-like growths called galls which stunt and eventually kill the spruce twigs.
